Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) operate by filtering water from the fish (or shellfish) tanks so it can be reused within the tank. The filtration systems operate continuously, keeping the water clean and providing a healthy environment for the fish.
A recirculating aquaculture system is an almost completely closed circuit. The produced waste products; solid waste, ammonium and CO2, are either removed or converted into non-toxic products by the system components. The purified water is subsequently saturated with oxygen and returned to the fish tanks.
Optimal feed utilization will result in lower waste production and avoid the use of chemicals to maintain water quality and animal welfare. Pathogens and fish health are controlled through physical and biological filters
